Newbies Helped Here

Steadman Uhlich

PhotoMentors offers  help for Newbies of all levels, whether they are Beginners or even Newbie Professionals or Professionals who are Newbies in some new area of photography.

You might wonder how a person can be BOTH a Newbie and Professional at the same time.

It is easy. You see, photography as a field of knowledge is so broad that NO single person can be an expert in ALL areas of photography.  It is too broad and with too many genres and areas of expertise.  So, it is very easy for someone to be BOTH an Expert or Professional and still be a Newbie in many areas of photography.  I know, because that is a situation I know from my own experience.

Don’t be ashamed of being a Newbie.

Instead, think of all the potential you have to learn things in an exciting field of study!

Unfortunately, Newbies (or Beginners) are often afraid to admit they don’t know much.

That can seriously limit their growth and greatly slow down their progress as a photographer.

Sometimes, Newbies get ridiculed on internet photography forums.

Sometimes they make mistakes and get harsh criticism.

Sometimes a Newbie gives up on photography because they are discouraged that they are not learning how to make better photos.

Sometimes criticism causes the Newbie to withdraw or quit photography.

It does not have to be that way!

There is another way to learn.  That is what PhotoMentors is all about!

This site is designed to help photographers of ALL levels of experience, whether they are Beginners or Experienced Professionals.  We will do that by following the “PhotoMentors Way” or method of learning and teaching photography.  It is a different method that will help you make faster progress and learn more quickly so you can make more WOW photographs!

_______________________________

Steadman’s Philosophy and Goals for PhotoMentors:

To help other photographers find the joy and the WOW of photography.

Create a supportive and nurturing global environment for the betterment of creativity, learning, and the development of talent.

To create a clear communications and learning channel that is far better, more humane, and more fun, than any chat room, forum, or email.

To provide a method of giving insightful, balanced, honest and constructive comments on a photographer’s work and methods and results.

To provide a place where photographers can learn how to tap into their own creativity.

To provide a place where discussions of the business side of photography produce results that will help a photographer become more successful.

To provide a channel where discussions can take place without subjecting members to harassment and prejudice.

My sincere feeling is that everyone has something of value to offer.

I also believe we all can learn something from one another. It can be surprising just how much.

I also believe in the “Golden Rule” of treating people how I would like to be treated.

One-on-One Communication: The PhotoMentors Relationship

I have a very easy method for teaching the principles of what I do to make beautiful photographs.

You can learn this.

I will be straight with you and make sure you understand before we go to another step in the journey.

To become a professional portrait photographer or a fine art photographer can be expensive and time-consuming. You can attend an art school, multiple workshops, take online photography courses, become an apprentice for an established photographer, struggle on your own, learn what you can from free online sources, read a bunch of books or just wing it.

All of these approaches take time and money. Some take more time, some take more money. No single approach is the best way. Each has its limitations.

Some people learn well in a group environment such as a classroom, while others would prefer to be taught as an individual. There are benefits and limitations for either approach.

If you want an in-depth and personalized experience then you should consider a one on one relationship with a Mentor.

PhotoMentors has Sessions that are scheduled on an individual basis to meet your needs.

These are tailored to your specific interest, needs, and abilities.

To find out more, simply call me and we can talk about it for a few minutes. Your first phone consultation is free.

The fact is, some people learn better in a one-on-one environment. Others simply don’t have the time to spend in a four-day workshop. Due to the demands of their careers, their businesses or their families, they may simply not have the days of time to attend distant workshops or classes at a local school.

Here’s the solution for you. The one-on-one solution using a PhotoMentors mentor relationship will give you the focused and personalized service and advice that you need and that fits your schedule.

This made be just the thing you need.

This is custom work for you. The goal is to perfect your skills and help you reach a new level of skill and confidence and creativity.

_________

Photography Workshops Have Limitations

One of the shortcomings of a workshop is that you may be attending a workshop taught by an experienced professional, but your ability to have them look at your work and learn about you is extremely limited. Even in workshops that last two or three days long, most workshop attendees may only get a very few minutes alone with the instructor, and that is only if they are lucky.

If you want undivided attention from the instructor, and you want teaching that is truly tailored to your specific needs. Then you need to consider one-on-one study with an instructor or Mentor.

Through one on one mentoring, you can focus your time and attention on the aspects of your photography. That will have the most significant positive effect on your growth and development.

Together we can look at various aspects of photography and identify what can be done to help you reach a new level or to overcome obstacles.

The PhotoMentors program is customizable to your needs.

My goal is to provide you with effective solutions and help you overcome the obstacles you face.

Whether the obstacles you face are technical in nature, or creative.

The PhotoMentors mentor will help you also consider how you are marketing your work. We can take a look at how you sell, price, and market your images.

I can also help you outline a marketing strategy that meets your goals. Depending upon which direction you choose to take.

______________________________________________________

This fits your lifestyle and needs.

This is tailored for your needs and fits your schedule with great flexibility.

You can work in Sessions around your busy schedule or the schedule of your busy family.

You get the convenience of learning at home. It is like having a visit from an expert right in your home, but you don’t have to straighten up or tell the kids to go upstairs.

This is perfect for students, busy professionals, or busy parents.

You will find my Simple Suggestions easy to understand, easy to implement, and clear and insightful.

These are simple things you can do to improve your photography.

You can study and progress at your own pace.

This is all done in a private setting; your own home or studio or office. This usually takes place via the Internet and telephone. Or I can come to your home or studio in person. If I come to your location, in addition to the fee, you’ll pay for the transportation and lodging.

The Benefit of Privacy

There is no more holding your hand up in class (or in a group workshop).

More importantly, it means no more being afraid of seeming stupid because you don’t know the answer and want to ask a question.

ALL questions are good! Questions are expected.

You won’t be inhibited by a group environment.

This will give you the freedom to break out of some boxes.

You will not be ridiculed or embarrassed no matter how basic the question.

This will be liberating and is intended to be so, so you can learn more quickly and make better progress towards your goals.

When you work with your Mentor, your confidence level is going to soar!

It happens with everyone I mentor.

_____________________________________________

How do we communicate?

You and I will talk.

That’s right, we will actually talk over the phone and the internet using having a nice conversation or a highly focused discussion or a question and answer dialog. At the same time we are talking, we will also be looking at images together using the internet.

This is my preferred method of communicating and what I call “LiveVoice Dialog Help.” Here is how: We will establish a communications link via the internet using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.  (A call using your landline or cell phone is possible too.)

This is FREE to you because all Skype-to-Skype calls are FREE even if you are on the other side of the planet from your Mentor!

So once you are on Skype, you won’t worry about a long distance phone bill or using up your cell phone minutes. We will use SKYPE as the preferred channel. This will allow us to talk freely without worrying about long-distance phone charges.

Of course, if you are on a Learning Session with a Tutor or Mentor, you will need to agree to compensate them for their time.

If you don’t want to use Skype or if you are away from your computer and still need to talk or have a pressing need to get an answer quickly, you may simply call me via your own home telephone (land line) or mobile (cell) phone.

I will give you a phone number to call. It is my New York City phone number. If you are in New York City, the call is a local call for you (no charge). If you are outside of New York City, it is a long distance call or toll call and you will pay for that call.

In short, you can have a dialog with me in a relaxed and friendly conversational style.

All this takes is a telephone or a headset connected to your PC or MAC.

In the near future, I will add video to the voice and we can have a dialog over the net using webcams. That is optional. If you don’t want to be seen, you can stick with just voice.

I have tested this and used this with photographers and people all over the world and it can sound just like the other person is right in the room with you. Using a headset, there is no echo or feedback. The sound can be crystal clear.

The only requirement is that you have a high-speed internet connection, and that you speak English OR some English and one of 12+ different languages besides English, including: French, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Swahili, Dutch, German, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, or Mandarin Chinese.

A headset with a noise-canceling microphone is highly recommended.

I use one that has excellent quality and folds down to pack with my laptop. The sound quality is superb! But it can also be used with a desktop PC. Mine is light weight and comfortable (I wear mine for hours at a time). My headset/microphone only cost $28. Other Skype certified headsets are just $22. See my Store Page for links to the gear you should consider.

Please note that all times listed are in EASTERN USA (New York) time. So check your clock or world time clock to make sure you don’t call outside of those times.

While we are talking over Skype or the phone, we will also be looking at your images or representative images TOGETHER.

This is visual and voice communication.

In the near future, I am going to offer VIDEO conferencing too. That means you and I will have the option to see each other via video and even share image and illustrations via video. After that will come multi-party conferencing too where several people can be on the same video call. It promises to be a lot of fun!

In addition to VIDEO conferencing, I am going to offer the latest in Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS) technology to selected people and for selected Sessions where this will be most beneficial. This is optional. If you don’t want to go that far, we can stay with voice+video or just voice.

Participants will be able to see my screen as I teach simple methods for improving an image. This way I can show you step by step what can be done to quickly and easily improve your images. You will be able to watch me work on an image or watch me point out the areas that are strong or weak in an image. This will come in the near future and will be offered to selected people I mentor.

How do you start?

Life is a journey.

Every journey starts with a single step.

When we design your PhotoMentors Learning Journey, you can decide to focus on one level, or we can combine levels of photography to create a special program.

When working with you, I will ask that you do some thinking.  This is to start your creative process.

You will need to provide me with a link to your website, online portfolio, or a selection of images that I can see if you have a website or on-line portfolio. If you do not currently have an on-line portfolio, we can work around that or I can tell you how to set one up very easily. We even have a discount available for one we recommend to students. You should do this prior to our first session.

I will also ask that you write a brief statement of a few sentences of what you hope to accomplish in what areas you’d like to focus on during our first hour session.

We will then work together to develop a program that is best suited to you, ensuring that you get the most value for the time you spend with your Mentor.

While there are many ways to use many tools and digital photography, I have never found a need to be an expert in all of the tools including Photoshop. My preference is to use simple methods and simple tools to accomplish what I need to do. Therefore, while I will help you with simple steps you can take, methods you can use, tips you can use, I will not devote the time to a Photoshop seminar. You can find many people on the Internet, who will have more expertise in Photoshop. In a short time, PhotoMentors will be providing access to PhotoShop experts.

What I will do is help you find your critical eye so that you can view your own work, more critically, and recognize what needs to be done to avoid mistakes in the future and to improve your images in the future.

I will also help you learn how to increase the visual strength of each image as well as your entire portfolio.

In essence, I am offering you the opportunity to work side by side with me to help you improve your images, skills, abilities.

One of my goals is to help you find the freedom to become more creative.

Help for the Mom or Dad with a Camera

Steadman’s Sincere Admiration for Amateurs

We don’t all want to be a professional photographer.

Most photographers are amateurs.

All professionals start out as amateurs.

Even as a professional photographer for years, I am still an amateur in certain areas of photography that I work in merely for my own pleasure (not for pay).

There is nothing wrong with being an amateur.

It simply means you love the activity of photography and love making pictures and you will do it even if you have to do it for no pay. Professionals don’t have that freedom. So rejoice that you can shoot what you want and when you want and not worry about making a living doing it. That is freedom!

I have heard too many professional photographers deride amateurs.

I have heard too many derogatory comments against amateurs with remarks against the “Mom with Camera” or “Guy with Camera” or “Uncle Bob.”

I don’t feel that way!

I respect, admire, and encourage ALL photographers, whether they pursue photography as a hobby, a pastime, a profession, or because they want to document their lives.

Amateur simply means:

Someone who does it for love.

I like that.

Steadman

I have seen many more beautiful portraits made by amateurs than I have that were made by studio professionals.

So don’t feel inferior.

Amateurs can produce superior images.

Amateurs can produce portraits that truly touch the heart.

I can help you learn how to make photos of your family with minimal equipment needed. You don’t have to use expensive studio flash. You don’t have to have a studio. You don’t have to have an expensive camera either.

I am absolutely certain I can help a “soccer mom” or a “workaholic dad” create better photographs of their family. And it will be a great joy for both of us to see the improvement in your photos. More importantly, you will gain confidence and make many more beautiful images to keep and share with your own family.

It does not take an art school degree. You don’t need the most expensive camera gear either. What you do need is an open mind and a desire to improve.

And you can learn how to do this while the kids are at school or after work without having to attend a class. You can learn and make dramatic improvements by working with a personal mentor who will guide you and help you.

From my POV, learning how to make better photos is one of the best things a parent can do for their family.

After all, who else is better positioned to capture those special moments in your family’s life together? Who else knows what is really important in those times you spend together. Kids grow quickly. So act quickly. Learn how to make the best photos you can now. They will really be priceless to you later.

I truly believe in helping others make better photos for themselves.

It is one of my missions for the rest of my life. I emphasize this with everyone I have ever met. Thousands of people came into my art gallery and almost every person left encouraged to make their own photos more meaningful to someone.

Photography Fundamentals

Why are fundamentals so important?

It is important that any photographer understand their most basic tools, the camera and lens.

Yet, so many photographers don’t have more than a basic understanding of how to snap a picture.

I can help you get beyond a lack of knowledge with personalized instruction that fits your needs.

For you to be the best photographer you can be, it will be necessary for you to understand these fundamentals.

They become the language of photography.

Some of the terms are technical in nature.

Don’t be intimidated by that.

We all have to learn some of these basics. I can help “translate” those terms to you in a clear, and easy to understand manner. I have done this for countless people over the years. It is a lot easier than you think.

Don’t let a photography book  or photography forum intimidate you.

Don’t let the technical wizards on the photography forums bamboozle or intimidate you either.

There is NO reason to be intimidated.

There is NO reason to limit your learning.

I can show you what you need to know and do it in a way that will amaze you. You won’t believe it until it happens. I know you will be excited by this. I was!

It can be done in a group environment like a class, or even better with a one on one tutor. In a short time, I can have you talking like a real pro with a good understanding of what the terms mean and how you should know them. I won’t burden you with arcane details. You will learn the essentials.

Shooting fundamentals are such things as exposure, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and white balance.

Don’t worry though, this is not all about technical stuff!

All of this will be discussed in a way that is understandable and may cause you to think “AHA, that is what that means!”

The big breakthrough for many people is when they find out how easy it is to make beautiful images without resorting to guesswork.

I will help you overcome problems you may have encountered with the following:

  • Aperture Selection
  • Shutter Speed
  • Metering
  • Bracketing
  • Underexposure
  • Overexposure
  • Lens Flare (unwanted)
  • Composition
  • Poor Focus
  • Camera Shake
  • Point of View
  • Depth of Field
  • Spot Metering
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Perspective
  • Balancing Visual Elements
  • Using color
  • Adjusting for Black and White images
  • Styles of Portraits

Invest in Yourself

Invest in Your Own Success and Knowledge for More Satisfaction

This is designed to be flexible and convenient. So instead of having to pay a large fee up-front, you may “pay as you go.”

You may also pay for sessions in advance and that depends upon your desires or the nature of the work or Sessions. Payment in advance for a group of Sessions brings real benefits to you. Ask for details.

Payment in full for your chosen Session (or block of time) is due at the time of registration and is non-refundable.

Session times are available on a first-come, first-served basis unless you book in advance.

We recommend that you reserve your appointment time in advance, so it will be scheduled at a time that is most convenient for you.

Appointments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so the earlier you sign up for a time slot, the better chance you have of getting the scheduling that is most convenient for you.

All bookings must be done via phone call or email with confirmation to make sure the time is set. This is easier than it sounds. You may call me on short notice and as long as my time is available when you call, and you pay prior to the session starting, I will work with you then. So, one can call and pay and start a session on a few minutes’ notice, given availability.

IF you pay for a session in advance and schedule an appointment in advance, and if you cannot keep that appointed time, you may reschedule for another time but will be charged an additional 1/2 hour or lose 1/2 hour in compensation to me for the rescheduling. Put another way, you will get 1/2 the amount of time credited toward a future session. Thank you for understanding.

If you are a professional, time is money, and time cannot be made up. I am flexible enough to let you reschedule, but that then takes another block of my time and reduces my ability to make money on that future date, so there is a cost to rescheduling pre-booked appointments. In short, try to keep your appointed time if you pre-book a Session time.

As these Sessions are offered on an “available basis” that means that every effort will be made to make the scheduled Session take place. In the event that the Mentor is not available for your scheduled time, you will be rescheduled at no penalty to you. Should the Mentor Relationship be canceled for any reason by the mentor, our liability is limited to the refund of the unused balance of any fees paid to us. You will be paying your Tutor, Teacher, or Mentor directly.

Payment Methods

Payment can be made via PayPal or by check or money order on a Bank in the USA or via Credit Card payment using PayPal or Google Checkout.

If you prefer to not use PayPal, call me and we can discuss other methods of payment.

My preferred method of payment is PayPal. However, payment does not require a PayPal account.

Examples of Sessions with Steadman

Your Subject

Anyone can learn to take a technically perfect photo. But, are you reaching the emotions of your viewers?

What is your photo about?

This will be an eye-opening and revelatory session for those who are open-minded and looking for insights.

We will explore together what you see in your work.

You will strengthen your ability to connect with people. You will learn simple things you can do that will make a visible difference in your images.

I will guide you on how you can learn to make portraits that capture the soul and spirit of people.

Go beyond just “taking” pictures.

______________________________________________________

Composition

I have designed this group of Sessions to help you improve your compositions.

This is easier than you think but it will make a significant difference in the look and feel of your images.

This is for all skill levels.

This is for all levels of experience.

This is for all kinds of photography.

Professional photographers or amateurs can benefit from this Session.

Even photographers who own many thousands of dollars of gear and have many years behind them, can benefit from this Session.

It is for everybody.

Don’t believe you need it?

I study composition every single day and have for dozens of years.

It is that important!

This workshop is not about me. It is about YOU. How YOU can make a difference and improve. I will be here to help you on that journey.

I will help you see more than you have seen before. I will also teach you compositional elements that will help you.

_______________________________________

Why Composition?

“Composition is the foundation of a good visual image whether it is a photograph, oil painting, or charcoal sketch.”

Steadman Uhlich

It is often overlooked by so many photographers who are concentrating on technical aspects such as getting the flash to fire correctly.

We will discuss the ways you can use composition to lend a sense of place or a sense of intimacy or a sense of action in an image.

You will learn how to avoid empty images and instead make images that are full of gripping content.

You will learn how to use environmental elements to your advantage, and what to avoid.

I will teach you how to make your compositions stronger and eye catching.

I will teach you what you should avoid and why.

To get higher prices for your photography, you need to have a good understanding of how to use composition. This will have an effect on your style.

I will also help you gain confidence in your own abilities. I will encourage you and show you how to create more artistic images.

You will be amazed at your progress and see quick improvement. I know you will.

Chiaroscuro with Steadman: Working with Light and Shadow

I will show you how to get the most out of many different lighting situations.

You will be introduced to my Simple Solutions approach that makes a difference.

You will learn how to use light to help you tell a story and create maximum impact on the viewer.

You will learn how to use light to convey depth and how to make images that appear to be deep.

You will learn how to distinguish good light from bad.

We will work with multiple lighting types and each one will teach you something.

Whether your interests or experience is with natural sunlight, ambient light, tungsten, florescent, video, speed light, or studio flash, there is something you can learn. We can also discuss the big choice of whether to use constant or flash light and the advantages of both.

I will help you see new ways to use uncomplicated lighting to evoke a natural response from the viewer.

I will show you how you can use ambient light to create a mood.

I will show you how to use minimal gear to maximum effect.

You will learn how to make outstanding portraits with just one light or with no artificial light at all.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on flashes and you don’t have to carry a ton of gear around.

Effective lighting is really very simple. Unfortunately, too many photographers get stuck on a slippery slope of buying more and more gear and making things much more complex, heavy, and expensive, than is necessary.

You will learn how to visualize what light will look like and how to modify it to create the look you want.

We can also discuss what makes light look believable and what makes it look fake or artificial.

You will learn what makes some light more interesting and more flattering.

If you want, you can also learn more about what makes light affect the viewer.

Previous experience with lighting sources or types is useful, but not necessary. You can come with a clean slate, but most importantly come with an open mind.

Posing or Not Posing a Person.

How, When, and Why You Should or Should Not Pose a Person.

This is the most commonly cited and self-proclaimed “weakness” according to most photographers.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Posing can be fun for you and your subjects.

Posing is not something you should fear.

Nor is it something you should necessarily do.

You will learn how to make the critical decisions whether to pose or not and how to manage subjects who want to pose even if you do not want them to.

You will learn how to pose children, infants, teens, adults, and groups.

You will learn how to look at your own posed photos and see the weaknesses.

You will learn how to evaluate a person and consider what might be a good POV and pose for them.

I will teach you how to look at “posing” as a fun and creative aspect of photography.

You will be surprised at what I can teach you in this area.

I anticipate that you will consider this one of the most refreshing and fun Segments to take.

I also believe it will make a very visible and immediate significant difference in your self-confidence as a photographer and will lead to real potential for you to increase your fees and make more money.

______________________

Starting with a Goal in Mind: The Concept Session

For years I have been advising photographers to “Start with a Goal” or state their intent for their images.

By this I mean that they should start their photo sessions with a goal in mind and that each image should have a goal to evoke some feeling or thought in the mind of the viewer.

Not everyone does this.

I will teach you how to use Intent as a key to better images and better portraits.

This is a core concept and often overlooked by most photographers.

______________________________________________________

Expanding Your Creativity and Expressing Creativity

These special Sessions are designed to blow your mind and help you break out of boxes and leap into new creative forms.

You will come away from this experience inspired and motivated to make more creative images and art.

You won’t transform yourself overnight, so don’t be mistaken or think this is a quick fix. This personal work requires some mind-stretching, box opening, rule breaking, and wall penetration. It means you have to work on it over time. But, I will be there to help you each step of the way, like a TrueMentor should.

Where will this take you? I hope it takes you further than you ever imagined it would. That would be fun to see.

I will help you create beautiful  images.

But they will be your images and using your imagination.

You may not think of yourself as creative.

I can show you how that may be just years of uncertainty and years of a lack of confidence holding you back.

I can help you find your WOW.

You might think of yourself as already being creative.

I can show you how to stretch your current boundaries and go even further.

You need to be ready to step outside of your comfort zone. Don’t get comfortable with conformity, and don’t let yourself settle into something that becomes old and stale and unsatisfying.

This is my Session designed for those photographers who are willing to stretch their abilities and open their eyes and mind.

I will show you new ways to observe light.

You will need to be ready to relinquish your defenses. Be ready to learn.

You will find positive energy in seeing what you can do and a perhaps ignite a new passion for photography.

My goal is to help you remove those things that inhibit you from expressing yourself visually.

If you find yourself here, you may be at a pivotal point in your photographic career, and this could be your big chance to take your photography to a higher paying level that will be more satisfying and more profitable for you.

My approach is not about showing you my “greatness” or anything like that.

I am here to help YOU learn how YOU can better YOURSELF.

You can do it!

I will show you how.

There is no need to think of “inadequacies” either.

Don’t think of yourself as lacking creativity.

Instead, you are just at a different place on the journey.

I will show you how you can grow your creativity.

I will help you find the potential within you. I will help you open your eyes to the creative possibilities…to grow even more than you ever imagined you could.

I will show you real practical and conceptual things you can do.

Think on an emotional level….Think of the significance a photo can have on someone’s life… Add more emotional value to the images…these are some of the things I will show you how to incorporate into your photography. You will see a big difference and I am sure you will enjoy the accolades you receive.

I will show you how to open your mind up to a whole world of new possibilities.

I will help you better use your eyes to see images differently.

I will show you how to look for potential in scenes.

You will learn how to think of pictures and describe them and see them in terms of light, color, texture, gestures, and action.

I will help you push your creativity envelope and explore new things and new styles….That is what a good coach, teacher, or mentor does…help push someone to do their best…and then do even better!

_______________________________________

Do you have the heart of an artist in you?

I can help you find the answer to that.

You have questions. I will help you find the answers.

I will help you change the way you think and the way you think of photography.

I will share my vision with you and my passion for life and photography. I will help you transform your photography and help you become more confident as a visual artist or photographer.

I will show you numerous examples of using natural ambient light.

We can discuss your personal projects. You have one don’t you? This will give you a chance to challenge yourself. I will give you balanced constructive comments and help you make progress.

Too many photographers are looking for a quick fix with a DVD or a Photoshop action set.

This often is used to cover up mediocrity and a lack of training and weak skills.

I can show you how to develop strengths in your images that do not depend on canned effects, action sets, or plug-ins.

The creativity will come from your eyes or your vision, not from software.

This is not about learning a new Photoshop trick. If you want to be a great photographer, you must learn how to make your vision come to life or appear as a photo. That means more than relying on a piece of software.

Steadman’s Opinion on Photography Critiques

Most photography critiques are poor and that is because the person doing the critique seldom has any knowledge of what the photo represents.

You may have heard: “The image needs to stand on its own.”

I will show you why that is foolish thinking in many cases and unrealistic.

Furthermore, most photo critiques don’t take into account what the artist/photographer is trying to say with the image (assuming they do have intent).

Whether you consider yourself a “portrait photographer” or a “portrait Artist” or a “Fine Art Photographer” or a conceptual photographer, you can benefit from the method I will use and show you how to use.

I have a way of critique that you can apply to other images in the future. So you can keep these points in mind as you shoot in the future and prevent mistakes from happening again.

I will teach you how to notice and learn from your mistakes and how to avoid them.

I invite you to look at the comments and testimonials from just a few of the thousands of photographers I have helped in the past.

Go visit the Testimonials Page here on this site and read some of the 200+ testimonials from photographers I have helped.

I can help you too. I am committed to helping others with a true sense of sharing.

I can assure you, the critique of your work will be based on constructive comments, positive feedback and honest appraisals. At no time will you be subject to ridicule, harsh comments, unjustified judgments, jealous digs or disrespect.

My goal is to help you become better than you are today.

Steadman’s Deep Portfolio Review Session

The Ultimate Portfolio Review Session

This Session has an unusual title and it was chosen on purpose. Because I think most portfolio reviews, especially those you get for free from website reviewers or people you know or people who click for few minutes on your website or blog, are usually superficial. Mine is deeper. So, Steadman’s Deep Portfolio Review. (trademark)

I want to offer you something completely different. This Session is not superficial, but instead, something Deep. Hence, I call this special Session the Deep Portfolio Review Session.

Somewhat like a Shiatsu Massage, this may hurt a little at first until you get familiar with the method, and understand that that little bit of discomfort you may feel from time to time, is you stretching yourself.

Like any athlete, you need to stretch to reach your best performance and abilities. But, even stretching can feel a little uncomfortable from time to time. To learn something new, you are going to have to be prepared to leave your comfort zone.

But it is going to make you feel much better in the end. It is like true therapy and will “center” you creatively. Unfortunately, you will have to either imagine the scented candles or burn a few for yourself on your end of the internet. But you get the point. This is going to go Deep.

In this Session you will perhaps go deeper than anyone has gone with you before regarding your portfolio or your art or your creativity.

Are you ready?

The Deep Portfolio Review takes time and focus.

It is not a superficial glance at a book or website, it can’t be done in ten minutes or even in twenty minutes. It may take a few hours or at least an hour. That is why it is so seldom done in the career of a visual artist and never done in a photography workshop or class environment.

It requires concentration, diplomacy, empathy, excellent communication skills, understanding of intent, and a real appreciation of your goals.

This is not done in a group setting. It is too personal.

What makes it Deep?

We will go over your images one at a time and we will take our time to explore and discover the best you have made. Then we will look at the entire collection and make an assessment based on the strengths and weaknesses found in your portfolio, or as artists like to say, “your body of work.” During this time, we will also share insights tips and suggestions based on your images.

Having a TrueMentor look at your portfolio is going to be more valuable to you than you probably expect at this time.

I have done this portfolio review for other photographers and artists, and they were all surprised at what they see and learn while looking at their own photographs that they have seen many times before. This is a very valuable step to take towards your goal of becoming a better artist or photographer.

It is our policy to welcome photographers and artists of all levels from amateur to professional. To that end, we do not attach any minimum standards of quality or experience for many of our services that are aimed at helping photographers start or expand their skills and knowledge and business.

The key feature of what we will do together is an in-depth portfolio review. This is critical for your success and growth. In order to assess your work and discuss confined areas for improvement and your further development.

Are you a Beginner, a Newbie, a Advanced Amateur, an Enthusiast, or a Professional?

How can an experienced professional photographer be a beginner at the same time?

Good question.

It depends on what you are considering.

Here at PhotoMentors, it does not matter to us if you have just bought your first camera or you have used one for years.

What matters is how far you are in your own Creative and Self-Development Journey related to the study and practice of photography.

We think of you as beginning your Learning Journey with a Mentor at some point in your life. And whether you are a newbie, brand new with a camera, or a seasoned professional with some battle scars, you can begin your Mentor Journey today.

It can be a new beginning for you.

A fresh start on a new path to self-discovery and improvement.

But nobody wants to be called a beginner do they?

So, we will avoid that term and instead just say that you are on the first steps of a new journey for you.

If you want a name for that, the best one I can think of is “Sojourner.”

That fits. It means someone who stays in a place for a short time while they are on a journey.

I don’t mind being called a Sojourner, because it means I am making progress on a journey!

Even professional photographers with many years of experience may be in the “beginning” phase or first steps of their Mentor Relationship Journey.

Beginning growth and continuing it is nothing to fear or avoid. It is essential.

So, even if you have many years experience as a photographer, you may see this as your first steps in a new direction for you. We will be there with you along that Journey.

The most important thing is to take that first step.

How far you go then depends on you.

The best Mentor Relationships are long-term and meaningful.

They don’t have to be expensive, nor do they have to last a long time or involve many hours together. They are based on established trust and mutual respect. That level of trust does not come overnight or in one hour. It takes some time and sharing and communication. It is a relationship. It builds over time.

Some higher level consulting and advice from the mentors will become available after you have proven your abilities and your serious dedication to learning and your intent for the knowledge. Put simply, it is up to the individual mentor to judge when you are ready for the higher-level work. That is the role of a good mentor.

Portfolio Development Sessions with Steadman

What is Portfolio Development?

In short, it is where an artist or photographer makes a dedicated effort to expand their range or extend their skills or augment or strengthen their portfolio of work. The end goal is to have a better portfolio of images to show.

To do this with a mentor, the development takes place over time. The protégé will pick an area they want to develop or in which they want to learn. This becomes their focus for some time, usually several weeks or months of time.

Over the time involved, the protégé will periodically confer with their mentor so the mentor can give feedback on the protégé’s progress. This leads to a refinement of the direction and skills. This can be highly valuable for an artist or photographer who is entering a new field of the art or using new methods and tools. At the end of the project, the photographer should have a more marketable group of images and a broader portfolio.

You must have intermediate to advanced skills.

Admission is by Steadman’s personal approval only and generally only after some preliminary work together. The reason is simple. This level of work requires trust and a good sense of direction.

Working with People

I will show you ways to connect with your subjects whether they are 8 months old or 80 years old. I will show you how to get the natural look that so many people prefer. Instead of worrying about posing, you will be connecting with your subjects. Instead of making artificial images, you will be tapping into the natural and real.

Instead of forcing people to produce a false expression, you will learn how to capture the natural.

My approach to better photography of people is to have a better focus on those people, their emotions, and the way that you can show that personality. It is not about camera technology or gadgets or fancy backdrops or colorful backgrounds. It is about seeing and working with people capturing an image that tells the viewer something about them in a way that few photos ever do.
______________________________________________________

Is there Homework?

There is some homework.

But this is what is going to excite you and stimulate you and prepare you to open your mind. Anyone can do this. I will show you how.

In many ways, this is more important than owning a camera.

The homework will help you evaluate your vision. I will help you explore that during our sessions. Then I will help you bridge that to your goals and help you get started on your path. This is exciting stuff. Wait till you see.

To really make this fit and to maximize the value to you, I will ask you to make a list of your specific goals and what you want to get from having a relationship with a mentor. Then I will develop a plan that is customized for you. This is going to increase the value I can share with you.

When preparing to speak to your mentor, it is important to remember to be as clear as possible in your intent. Tell your mentor what your goals are for the conversation. Be as clear as possible about your goals for the photographs you share with your mentor.

Because text communications like e-mails often don’t give a clear communication of feelings, the use of voice and video that we will be using will help you immensely.

Even if you are not good at writing, using our methods. You will be able to communicate just as if you are speaking to us in a friendly conversation.

Clarity is important.

PhotoMentors is based on the recognition that a good dialogue and interactivity can be more helpful and constructive when learning about photography.

How much does this cost?

Is this expensive?

A better question to ask is: “Will this help me?”

If it does not have value to you, then any money or amount you spend is too much.

An even better question you should ask yourself is: “What am I currently doing to make myself better?”

So the real question is: “Are you worth it?”

Do you value personal growth and learning something that may make you more confident, more happy, and more fulfilled?

Only you will be able to tell after you have spent some time working with me. I can assure you, that I truly believe that you will find this some of the best money and time you have ever spent on learning more about photography or what you can do for yourself.

I hope to show you new insights and ways of looking at photos, looking at photography as an activity, and looking within yourself at your own untapped creativity.

I don’t know about you, but finding a better way to express my creative desires is worth a lot to me.

It is also very fulfilling.

Because you will see the improvement, you will be able to watch your own progress as we work together.

You won’t just hear encouragement from me alone.

You will hear the praise from others in your community. You will gain the respect for yourself and your skills that will give you great confidence to try even more difficult things and to express yourself even more fully.

It can be a transformational experience, if you let it.

You might think to yourself: I can buy a new lens for what I would spend on guidance with a mentor.

Yes, you could, but you would also get less benefit from it than you will from this experience.

If you allow me to work with you, I will show you how you will save more money by showing you the things you don’t need to buy. More importantly, I will show you how investing in yourself and what you can do, not in gear, will make the biggest difference in your art or photography. It is very likely to make a much bigger difference in your ability to command higher fees from your market too. I will help you find the real joy of photography and art and creativity.

I encourage you to take your time.

What you learn here or later through PhotoMentors may truly change how you see photography in your life and lead to a more successful and more satisfying future for you.

I really mean that.

I know it can happen. It happened for me. :)

How can I help you?

My Role as Your Mentor

The most important thing I can do is inspire you to look at your photography differently and to challenge you to consider new ways of making photographs.

From this, you will find new creativity inside yourself and new inspirations in the world around you. When that happens, you will feel the Power of WOW as the world becomes a place full of creative possibilities. That is my ultimate goal.

In addition, I can provide you with valuable advice on how to avoid common mistakes and how to make better photographs.

On this site you will find many pages that will tell you about many more ways I may be able to help you. Look for the blue Related Posts links at the bottom of this page for more information.

_________

Insight is the Goal

One of the things I keep in mind when mentoring other people is my goal to make the lesson something that they “own” and understand fully. I want the mentee to understand the reasons and “see” it so clearly that it becomes something they will retain and value. This comes by sharing how I see their images or work and comparing how THEY see the work and THEIR vision. We discuss things. We compare their intent and their preliminary result (such as a raw image).

Then by use of questions the mentee will discover things for themselves. This may then be reinforced by examples and variations.

Choices are discussed.

Options uncovered.

Creativity unlocked.

The result is often an insight for the mentee.

In some cases this takes only a few minutes to “see” and understand a conceptual or visual difference, or to learn a new way of looking at the subject or a new technique.

In many cases this breakthrough can take just a few moments or even seconds!

When that “AHA!” moment occurs, it is stimulating and rewarding for both the mentee and the mentor. This shared discovery moment can be something that helps a photographer or artist break out of a box and make progress in fulfilling THEIR vision.

Steadman’s Simple Truths:

“Gear is easy to replace or change and can be changed in minutes.

Good habits take time and repetition to develop.

Bad habits can stick with you a lifetime IF they are not identified, recognized, and corrected.

Insights can make a difference in seconds!”

How do you value learning?

The value of what you learn may be “priceless.”

Steadman’s guarantee:

If I can not offer a suggestion that could improve your photography or help you avoid image weaknesses in the future then there is no charge for the time we spend together.

In short, if I don’t see something I could improve or if I don’t offer you a suggestion for improvement, I will not charge you for my time!

You won’t find a better guarantee than that.

_____________

Steadman’s Method

1. When I teach or mentor or consult with photographers around the world, I use a method I call a Live Voice+Visual Dialog on a phone call.

Some people mistakenly think this is just a phone call. It is far from that!

This service is based on both of us sharing a dialog or conversation at the same time as we view your photos together!

We will use BOTH Voice and Visual communication at the same time!

That is not the full story.

You will need to try it to understand and to experience the great difference for yourself!

All communication is by live voice call (a phone call or Skype call).

In short you must call me and speak with me to use this service. No emails. No chat. No PMs. No text messages. No typing. No writing. It is easier and much better this way for many reasons.

_______________

Why does Steadman use Voice calls instead of email or text messages?

Simply because I can tell you many things in a phone call that I will not type and and things I cannot write as effectively.

It is much easier and better and faster as a means of communicating.

It allows us to have a deeper level of communication.

It is more friendly, more natural, and reduces the anxiety or intimidation you might naturally feel when consulting an expert about your photos.

It is more fluid and more immediate in response, so you don’t have to wait and wonder while waiting for an email or text message.

It is a better way of communicating meaning and subtle comments.

It is much more personal and more “human” than email.

It is much more FUN for both you and me!

It is the BEST way to communicate (aside from a real face to face meeting).

_______

What if this call is international?

I provide a truly global service via this site.

I have clients or mentees and photographers I am helping who are truly located around the world.

I communicate with them all via my special method of Live Voice+Visual Dialog.™

My method helps them all accelerate their learning and quickly improve their photography!

Please read below in this post.

You will find much more information about how I communicate with other photographers around the world in many languages!

If you speak English fluently, I can tell you more information and more clearly and more quickly than I can type. I can tell you more because I will have a “Live and Real Time” dialog or conversation with you. The difference between writing and speaking is considerable. You will see and understand on your first call why this is much better than a written comment or critique on a forum.

If English is NOT your first language or if you are concerned about using English because your use of English is NOT fluent or you may feel inhibited in any way from using English, please read down below in this post. I provide help in 18+ languages in addition to English, so I may be able to help you.

_____________
_____________

2. You will not be called by me!

I do NOT call outbound. You will call me when YOU are ready to speak about your photography.

This is so you can be assured that you will NOT be disturbed at a time that is inconvenient for YOU or your family or your work.

You call me by using your phone or Skype.

You may even make a long-distance or international call for FREE if you use a Skype to Skype (VOIP) call so there would be NO long distance phone charge to you.

_______________
________________

Is English a foreign language for you?

If English is not your native language, but is your second language, then you will find it much easier to communicate using my Live Voice+Visual Dialog™ communication method.

There is no need for you to worry about misspelled words or poor grammar or accent.

I will help you and you will find it easier to express yourself clearly.

If there are any questions, it is easier to get clarity because we will be talking in a dialog. If you ever need to ask me a question to clarify something you may not understand, it is very easy because we are in a dialog, with real-time live communication connecting us.

I have Global Operating Hours (Hours of Availability) that fit YOUR schedule around the globe!

You may also call within a wide window of hours. My Global Operating Hours are 9:00AM (0900 hours) to 9:00PM (2100 hours) SEVEN Days a week. Those hours are based on Eastern Standard Time (New York City’s time zone).

I frequently speak with photographers living on the opposite side of the earth from me. It is not unusual nor is it inconvenient for me to speak with photographers in Japan, Australia, Pacific Islands, China, India, Europe, etc. I do this every week and even on weekends!

Don’t let long distances inhibit you from accessing the expertise that can help you improve your photography!

__________
__________

Global Communications in English or Your Language (when possible)

What if English is not your first language?
What if your use of English is infrequent or limited?
What if you are not fluent in English?
What if your accent is strong?

You must speak some English to communicate with me, but you do NOT have to be fluent or your English could be “limited.”

English does not have to be your first language and you do not need a perfect accent. You do NOT have to be fluent in English. (see the testimonial letter down below).

I have studied 12+ languages other than English (my native language). I truly enjoy speaking with people from other countries, other cultures, and those who speak other languages.

I am accustomed to communicating with people who are using English as a second language. I regularly communicate with people who are from: Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

I may be able to help you even IF your use of English is limited or IF you do not consider yourself fluent in speaking English.

Many people understand more English than they feel comfortable speaking. I understand that and why.

Many people who do NOT speak English frequently or fluently may feel inhibited about calling to speak using English.

Do not feel that way.

I am an expert in cross-cultural communication.

______________

I can help you and will do my best to communicate effectively with you in your language!

I may be able to help you by speaking to you in:

  1. French

  2. Spanish

  3. Portuguese (Brazilian)

  4. German

  5. Dutch

  6. Italian

  7. Japanese

  8. Russian

  9. Swahili

  10. Mandarin Chinese

  11. Catalan

  12. Norwegian

  13. Swedish

  14. Danish

  15. Polish

  16. Romanian

  17. Finnish (coming soon)

  18. Bahasa Malaysia (coming soon)

  19. Bahasa Indonesia (coming soon)

  20. Croatian (coming soon)

  21. Serbian (coming soon)

  22. Slovenian (coming soon)

  23. Tagalog (coming soon)

So if you speak or understand one of those languages and some English or if you speak English fluently, we should talk!

I do not claim to be fluent in those languages (except English) and my accent in those languages may make you wince or laugh at times too. But I will try to help you in YOUR language as much as possible. I may be able to tell you (while speaking in one of those languages above) what I see that could be improved in your images/photos and how you could do it.

If you understand one of those languages and speak some English (even if not fluently), OR if you do speak English, you should be able to understand me and what I will be able to tell you about your photos that may help you improve your photography.

I will keep my comments simple, my speaking pace in English at a pace comfortable for you, and I will make Simple Suggestions™ you should be able to understand and apply even IF your use of English is limited. Read more about how this works on the Six Minute Solution page .

Seven ways you can help other photographers and yourself too!

Have you heard of Karma? Do you believe in the Golden Rule?

Karma is the belief that all deeds can shape the past, present, and future experiences. In the West, this is sometimes expressed by the Christian concept of “you reap what you sow.” In short, do good to others and good may come to you. I truly believe that helping others helps not only them, but also ourselves in ways we often cannot anticipate. Each action of good you do, can make the world a nicer place. Do you believe in the Golden Rule?

1. Tell others about this site.

If you frequent photography forums and see a good opportunity to let people there know about this site, please do. Others who read your favorite forums or blogs may be looking for free lessons and inspiring photographs from which they can learn. Or they may be new to photography forum posting and need some guidance on how to learn more from getting critiques of their photos. Just direct them to www.photomentors.com.

This site is written to inspire photographers of all levels and help them have a better experience in photography.

We even have ten pages devoted to tips on how to have a better experience on a photography forum and those tips may help your favorite forum have better posts and more participation.

2. Please tell at least three of your friends in your community or social network about this site.

If you are on Facebook for example, you could tell your friends. They could be at any level of photography. Anybody who likes photography can benefit from the free lessons or from seeing the thousands of inspiring photographs from some of the world’s best photographers. PhotoMentors has things designed to be of interest to ALL levels of photographers from Beginners to Advanced Professionals.

3. Click on one of the social bookmarking links in this page and let others know about this post or page or this new site.

Tweet your friends. Tell others you DIGG this site. Tell your Facebook friends. Look in the right column of this page and almost all pages on the site for the link that says “SHARE” and click on it to go a pop up list of bookmarking links. It is easy and fast. 4. Add a link to PhotoMentors site to your blog or site.

Or write a post on your blog about what you saw on this site. Did you see a photo that inspired you when you viewed a Masters of Photography Gallery here? Did you learn something about a photographer you had not known about before? Tell others about the thousands of photos by Masters of Photography found here. Remember, our focus is on providing free access to all kinds of photographs and information that will inspire photographers of all levels.

5. Save yourself time while also helping other photographers.

In the future you might come across a newbie or someone new to photography. They may be looking for inspiring examples of great photography or they may want some guidance. This site may help them have a better experience with photography too. You won’t have to type much to help them, all you have to do is simply post a link to this site and that may solve their problem with a couple of clicks of your mouse. Simply tell them to look for the section on Free Lessons and Tips. That helps them, saves you time, and helps me help other photographer learn. So, that is a Win+ Win+ Win.

6. Subscribe to the PhotoMentors mailing list for our FREE Newsletter.

Why? First because the newsletter will be used to tell you about Special Opportunities that may be very valuable to you. Some opportunities may involve substantial discounts on things photographers use. These will be “un-advertised” exclusive offers that may be as much as 50% – 70% OFF retail. Other opportunities are related to activities that may be for publishing images and other opportunities to learn or participate. The more subscribers the newsletter has will help us negotiate special offers and discounts from vendors that can then be passed on to you our readers.

It will only take a moment to add your email to the list. Simply fill in the simple Subscribe Form found on the right column of all pages here on the site. Look in the lower right column. The newsletter will keep you informed when we have special offers and opportunities for our friends around the world. You will also learn about exclusive discounts and other nice things.

Don’t worry about receiving too many newsletters or emails from us. We only send out the newsletter infrequently, but when we do, there will be something of value in it for you. There will be many valuable and exclusive things coming in the future, including great opportunities for photographers, so don’t miss this easy way to hear about it first.

7. Look around this site. Soak it in. Imagine. Be inspired!

You might find something else that interests you or helps you. In 2011 I plan to have hundreds of pages of freely accessible educational content, and 5,000+ inspiring photos by Masters of Photography, and dozens of free educational videos.

I recommend seeing the Site Map (Table of Contents) so you can easily see the long list of articles, posts, and pages listed by topics.

If you would like to see if I can help you as a mentor, then just give me a call using the Skype button or the phone number at the bottom of each Page.

Finally, do what you can to help others post their photos and also get comments and have a good time doing so. That makes the world a nicer place and gives us all more nice photography to see on the net.

Thank you for your help.
