Extraordinary Portraits that Affect People Emotionally
He considers his greatest achievement as an artist is the unexpected deep emotional response that sometimes occurs when people view his portraits. His portraits have a rare ability to touch the viewer’s emotions.
Sixteen people have literally been brought to tears while viewing his photographs of people they do not know.
Two of these, wrote that this happened while viewing his works over the internet. Countless others who do know the people in the photos were also moved to tears. But it is those viewers that have no connection at all by family or friend to the person in the portrait image that Steadman finds most memorable and remarkable.
“The Greatest Satisfaction I Know as an Artist”
I never expected this to happen. Of course I would be pleased if my clients liked their portraits, or those portraits of members of their family. Countless times, I have received notes and calls and have been told how family members (husbands, mothers, fathers, grandparents) were moved to tears by a portrait I made of someone in their family. I thought that was wonderful.
But something else happened too.
Total strangers were moved to tears by some of my portraits of people they do not know.
It was not as frequent as seeing family members of my clients or clients themselves cry, it was certainly rare, and it was not expected. Yet it happened 16 times that I know of. Fourteen times I saw with my own eyes, and two additional times men wrote me to tell me this.
I truly saw it happen 14 times with my own eyes and the response came from both women and men.
Yes, men cried too!
It was when people who viewed a portrait I made were brought to tears by that portrait, yet they do not know the person in the portrait.
Bear in mind, these were not portraits of war victims, drought victims, or people in pain or suffering. They were not destitute, hungry, malnourished, or disfigured. They were portraits of ordinary people, not celebrities, not famous, not even known to the viewer.
When that happened, it changed my life in a profound way.
It gave me an idea or inspiration to follow a different path in my life and completely changed how I see photography and how I will use it in the future.
What caused those people to cry?
It is an extraordinary response to the face of a person they don’t know by prior meeting, but somehow know in their heart.
When I witnessed this response, I was watching the tears stream down their faces, and listening to what the viewers revealed to me.
Some told me things about what caused this response. Sometimes we just shared those emotions in silence, as they were so strong that it was truly a moment where the viewer was speechless. It always touches me deeply too, even to the point where tears filled my own eyes as I witnessed this emotion connection the viewer had with my work.
These have been some of the most unforgettable moments in my life as an artist. They transcend anything material or business related.
As an artist, it gave me the greatest satisfaction to know that my art has reached someone deeply, and to witness that with my own eyes was an unexpected moment of enlightenment.”

Other Measures of Success as an Artist
Art Collectors, Artists, Museum Directors, Publishers, Editors, Designers, Portrait Painters, Professional Photographers, Writers, Poets, and All Kinds of People, Young and Old, praise his work.
Extraordinary Market Success
Steadman’s individual portraits (a single image) sell for thousands of dollars with many commissions over five-figures.
His original paintings as small as 8 x 10 inches sell for over $1500 and his larger paintings (e.g. 30×40 inches) sell for five figures.
Individual prints of his fine art photographs sell for thousands of dollars per print.
Art collectors buy copies of his Fine Art Portraits too. These are portraits of people they have never met and do not know. Thus, sometimes his portrait clients truly become “Art.”
Mass Media Recognition
Steadman has been the subject of feature articles in national art magazines and had several covers in art magazines.
There have been several multi-page articles about his work in other market leading glossy magazines.
Both his portrait work and still life works have been the subject of articles.
One magazine publisher said that when Steadman’s Fine Art photography was featured in the magazine, they got “rave” admiring comments from artists and art gallery owners across the country.
____________
Global Appeal
His portrait clients come to his studio from across the USA to have Steadman create their portraits.
Several different portrait clients have even come from abroad to have Steadman create their portraits.
Art collectors across the country commission his work too.
____________
Trust from Clients
Steadman has developed a high level of trust with his clients and a sterling reputation with them.
Real Trust is Extraordinary and Appreciated
Some of Steadman’s Art Patrons have commissioned and totally paid for work literally years in advance of delivery.
The record so far is six years in advance, and that was for a five figure amount commission.
Steadman considers this another extraordinary and satisfying response to his art.
Several others were of even higher amounts, but less time existed between the commission and the finished project.
In many more cases, the trust shown before the portrait sessions has lasted for years, with his clients paying his total commission years in advance.
This is not a requirement, but it does happen.
His clients have confidence in his commitment to them, his abilities, and they truly trust him.

Self-Taught
He is completely self-taught as an artist and photographer.
While he has received wide acclaim for his photography, he never expected to become a professional photographer nor did he go to school to become one. He has never taken a photography class and, as of today, has never been in a photography workshop as a student.
Yet that doesn’t mean he does not value learning, tutoring, or mentoring. It is just that his path has been different from some.
____________
“Life is a Learning Process and an Opportunity for Growth!”
“I always look at life as a continuous learning process.
I don’t mind being called a newbie, amateur, or beginner in many pursuits. In fact, that insatiable curiosity that I find at the beginning of new endeavors is full of stimulation and fascination. It helps fuel and continue the later growth.
I learned years ago, that the first step to real enlightenment, is to understand how little one knows.
I always consider the next step I take as a new beginning with unlimited potential. Each step then is a new step toward reaching my goals I set for myself on my own journey.
Of course, there are things I wish I knew years ago, and that I am just learning now. As I see it, I have so much more to learn in the future. So I always keep an open mind to learning whatever I can and from whomever I can learn.”

________
Multiple Media Artist
As an artist, he works in various media. His paintings may be made in watercolor, encaustic (molten wax), oil, acrylic, or other media. Some are on paper, some on canvas, some on wood panels. Encaustic is an ancient form of painting and has been in use for thousands of years and was developed by the ancient Greek and Egyptian civilizations.
Steadman’s favorite art medium is Encaustic, or molten wax painting.
His favorite photographic subject is People.

Art Gallery Visitor: “Is that a painting or is it a photograph?”
“So many art gallery visitors were surprised by seeing my paintings and photographs in my art gallery. In my gallery rooms, I would show my paintings and large scale or life-size photographs. It occasionally caused some puzzled looks on the faces of both the average public and professional painters and photographers. Some could not tell one media from the other.
I have found some irony in my Art and public response to it.
With one of my styles of painting, people think the paintings are photographs, despite the fact that they are paintings on canvas made by hand over many hours with a brush and tubes of paint.
At other times, people look at my large photographs and think they are paintings and “swear” they are paintings.
I always smile at that bit of irony. We often laugh about it together when I correct a case of mistaken identity.
Finally, I have another medium I like to work in and it is my favorite painting medium. It is painting by hand with “hot wax” or Encaustic painting. Those paintings often fascinated people too and were very popular. Some are highly abstract and very colorful.
Unfortunately, most of those paintings are impossible to photograph in a manner that shows well on the internet. To see a photo of one on the net is such a poor reflection of what they truly look like that I don’t even show them on my websites or on the internet. They are highly colorful, with astounding optical illusions and textures and depth that cannot be shown on a photo. In some, the illusion of depth is so profound, one can feel like one can ‘reach into’ the painting to pull out an object.”

What you see on this website is only one facet of Steadman’s work as a Photographer and Artist.
Only a small number (40) of his portraits are shown on this PhotoMentors site in a Gallery for Steadman Uhlich’s portraits. This should give you some confidence in his understanding of how images can be created to move or affect people.
Be aware that what Steadman shows within his online Portrait Portfolios is not the entire range of his past work or current work.
Steadman’s commercial photography sells for thousands of dollars per assignment.
Steadman’s commercial, landscape, macro, and still-life work is NOT shown on his portrait oriented websites and some of his best work is NOT shown on the internet at all or anywhere on the internet.
Steadman’s still life photos sell for thousands of dollars per print, have been the cover and featured article of a national art magazine, but you won’t see them here or on his website.
Some things are just not shown on the public sites. Those that are shown are selected for reasons. In short, there is much more than meets the eye via the internet.

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from a consultation with Steadman Uhlich
Note: this Mentoring Session was conducted using voice over the internet (via skype) and image file transfers over the internet with the call taking place between the USA and France. The voice quality was crystal clear (it sounded like we were in the same room), the conversation was fun, stimulating, and electric with creativity, humor, and sharing. The only thing we could not share was the bottle of fine French wine.
______________
“I came across Steadman Uhlich in a photography forum where both of us participate, and I was impressed with his commitment to helping people. From there, we shared some views, and, when he informed me that he was setting up a place where people could learn and improve, I knew I was going to try it out.
As it happens, that day, I had gone out and tried to make the most of the last of the autumn leaves. I love trees, especially when clad in full colour, but, somehow, have not been able to get any tree shots that make me go “WOW.” Out of maybe 300 such shots accumulated over 2 years shots, not one of trees, even though I love them, and shot them hundreds of times.
Now enter Steadman Uhlich. I told him this “story”, and expressed frustration. He didn’t give me any technical tips. I assume that, as he knew I could handle other types of shots/subjects, he also knew that the problem was more in “what to want to do” than in “what to do” or “how to do it”. So he told me what to want to do.
‘Imagine the tree in its permanence. Things come and go, people come and go, weather comes and goes, seasons come and go, trees remain. Go out and shoot the tree in all its varying conditions.’
Within a couple of minutes, I was totally inspired, having understood why I have up to now failed, and having had my mind opened to avenues that I had not even considered in how to deepen my approach to photography.
This part of the conversation lasted but a few minutes.
My experience as a business consultant as well as a personal development coach tells me that Steadman Uhlich is exactly who he claims, a true mentor.
Like a locksmith who can pick locks and open doors in people’s minds that free up capability, creativity and talent about photography.
Such people are rare, I am priviledged to have found one who will deepen the pleasure and richness of my hobby.
Thanks, Steady!
Philippe”

“I just wanted to drop a quick note to relay the experience I had with Steadman Uhlich a couple of days ago. On Sunday, I had the pleasure of meeting Steadman in person and spending over four hours talking (in an onsite, face-to-face Mentoring Session), looking at work I had done and going over a little post processing. The time just flew by.
Steadman opened my eyes to many things including composition, shadows and light. Things I thought I had a grasp on, but no I did not.
He truly showed me a way to look at subjects in a way I have not read in books.
His way of teaching and making me look at myself is relaxed and laid back and very refreshing.
I would encourage anyone interested in bettering their photography skills to take the time and give him a call. You will not be disappointed in the time spent on the phone with Steadman. I am looking forward to our future meetings and learning as much as I can from him.”

“Hi, my name is Jeffrey and I am from the Philippines. I just had a Free call using Skype with Photomentors and talked to Steadman Uhlich about photography and what I want to create.
When I first heard his voice, I was not nervous at all even though speaking in English, since English is my Third language.
The conversation that we had was worth it, all of the things that needed to be discussed were really clear, from voice to details.
I am also new in photography and after the conversation and my readings in the PhotoMentors website pages, I was inspired and have decided to take a journey with Photomentors.
I think this is way better than a photography workshop that I’ve attended because this will become more of a “Mentor and Student” relationship rather than “Teacher and Group of people Relationship”.
I believe Photomentors can change your life in a better way not just in photography, but also in your life as a person, after the call and the readings in the website.
You’ll never know, One Call could Change your life! “

___________
Steady,
I just wanted to take a few minutes to again thank you for all that you’ve done for me.
I originally posted on [photography forum], a project that I was trying to accomplish with my Grand Daughter, utilizing Natural Light, of her playing her guitar by the window. I knew that I wanted to do them in B&W, so I posted my 1st try on [photography forum], in the People Photography forum. I was getting a lot of people looking by no one really taking the time to comment.
I really was looking for help in this area, as I really wasn’t just posting shots, I really wanted to learn & improve my results.
Steady, this is where you came along, you presented me with some positive comments, but at the same time, showed me where improvement could be made, or at least explored. You offered to talk to me, for a few minutes, to further discuss some of your comments.
I must admit, that at the beginning I was somewhat hesitant, as I’m “fairly new” into photography & thought that I might easily be overwhelmed, in our talks. How wrong I was!!!
Steady, you immediately made me feel right at home, no intimidation at all.
We were miles apart, yet I felt like you were right there with me, not talking down to me, but to me & where I maybe didn’t understand what you were saying, or what you meant, you took the time to reword things, explain, maybe in more detail, but using another approach. I found myself, even asking for more & more.
Then we started analyzing the pictures that I had posted.
You started pointing out things to me, especially in the facial area, that I never really saw, they were always there, but what a difference in the eyes of the beholder.
We started discussing the limitations that I had in where I was shooting the pictures (in my daughter’s kitchen, table & chairs pulled off to the side, me shooting out in the hall way). You could have very easily said, “well find another spot”, but you didn’t. You sat down & said, “so let’s see what we can do with what we have”.
Ideas, that you mentioned, about positioning, cropping, trying to get the viewers’ eyes to do some of the work for us, showed me so much in a different perspective.
Can’t thank you enough!!
Thanks again,
Bob V.

“Enabled me to Unlock..”
____________
This was the third time I mentored with Steadman Uhlich, or, more accurately, was mentored by him.
Today my issue was that I had taken a picture which I really liked, posted it on a couple of forums, and, uncharacteristically received, no comment or response whatsoever. So I asked Steady why that might be.
He started by looking at my picture, stating that he saw that it had potential, and asking me what I saw in it. I mentioned the straight stem of the flower, and the sphere adorning it, and the contrast with the sideways leaves, like so many brushstrokes in Oriental style.
He agreed with my “take” on my picture, and said that, if that was the case, why did I not do simple things to make that more immediately visible to the viewer?
He suggested darkening the background. That took me all of 30 seconds, and already made a significant impact. Then he suggested different framing and or cropping, and gave me 4 options. Another 4 or 5 minutes maybe.
Simple, once Steady had suggested it.
He made it feel so obvious, yet nobody else had seen the potential of the picture and enabled me to unlock it.
Thanks, Steady! You and I must do this more often.

On Steadman’s Six Minute Solution
“Hi my name is Jeffrey, I am from Davao, Philippines.
I have heard about this new service from Steadman Uhlich at PhotoMentors called the “Six Minute Solution.” As a mentee from PhotoMentors, Steady and I had a talk via Skype from several photos that we take a look at and some of these photos were quickly fixed and improved with Steadman’s “Six Minute Solution.”
I am totally amazed on how Steady made my snapshot photo look great and that you could even do it with a non professional camera in a short period of time.
He could provide some solution on how to improve your photo quickly, and that includes photos possibly taken from your camera such as; DSLR, point and shoot or even with a Mobile phone camera.
Just imagine how your photo will be quickly fixed or improve with a low cost session from a 10 year professional photographer who had his own art gallery exhibit shop.
Yes, only one photo per call but one photo could make a big difference on how you shoot the next hundreds or thousands of pictures in your life.“

He is a natural with how he approaches the areas where improvement can be made, taking his time to really make sure that you understand the points being made in a very easy-going and friendly dialogue.
His suggestions are efficient and to the point, focusing not only on the specifics of a particular photo, but also,
taking care to explain why and how this could apply to many other photos as well.
Highly recommended!”

Philippe is finding new ways to look at his fine art photography subjects with renewed enthusiasm and confidence.
Jeffery is learning how to make photos of people that capture attention with compositions that are stronger and “Art Gallery Quality.”
Tim has regained his confidence in his work and is stimulated to try new compositions and new ways of presenting his vision to the viewer.
David now has a new set of conceptual visualization tools to use when composing his photos and working with his model. He is now able to see that there may be hidden beauty in a photo that can be discovered in just a few minutes…in fact, in Six Minutes or less!

_________
Insight is the Goal
One of the things I keep in mind when mentoring other people is my goal to make the lesson something that they “own” and understand fully. I want the mentee to understand the reasons and “see” it so clearly that it becomes something they will retain and value. This comes by sharing how I see their images or work and comparing how THEY see the work and THEIR vision. We discuss things. We compare their intent and their preliminary result (such as a raw image).
Then by use of questions the mentee will discover things for themselves. This may then be reinforced by examples and variations.
Choices are discussed.
Options uncovered.
Creativity unlocked.
The result is often an insight for the mentee.
In some cases this takes only a few minutes to “see” and understand a conceptual or visual difference, or to learn a new way of looking at the subject or a new technique.
In many cases this breakthrough can take just a few moments or even seconds!
When that “AHA!” moment occurs, it is stimulating and rewarding for both the mentee and the mentor. This shared discovery moment can be something that helps a photographer or artist break out of a box and make progress in fulfilling THEIR vision.
Steadman’s Simple Truths:
“Gear is easy to replace or change and can be changed in minutes.
Good habits take time and repetition to develop.
Bad habits can stick with you a lifetime IF they are not identified, recognized, and corrected.
Insights can make a difference in seconds!“

How do you value learning?
The value of what you learn may be “priceless.”
Steadman’s guarantee:
“If I can not offer a suggestion that could improve your photography or help you avoid image weaknesses in the future then there is NO charge for the time we spend together.
In short, if I don’t see something I could improve or if I don’t offer you a suggestion for improvement, I will NOT charge you for my time!
You won’t find a better guarantee than that.”

Steadman’s Method
1. When I teach or mentor or consult with photographers around the world, I use a method I call a Live Voice+Visual Dialog™ on a phone call.
Some people mistakenly think this is just a phone call. It is far from that!
This service is based on both of us sharing a dialog or conversation at the same time as we view your photos together!
We will use BOTH Voice and Visual communication at the same time!
That is not the full story.
You will need to try it to understand and to experience the great difference for yourself!
All communication is by live voice call (a phone call or Skype call).
In short you must call me and speak with me to use this service. No emails. No chat. No PMs. No text messages. No typing. No writing. It is easier and much better this way for many reasons.
_______________
Why does Steadman use Voice calls instead of email or text messages?
Simply because I can tell you many things in a phone call that I will not type and and things I cannot write as effectively.
It is much easier and better and faster as a means of communicating.
It allows us to have a deeper level of communication.
It is more friendly, more natural, and reduces the anxiety or intimidation you might naturally feel when consulting an expert about your photos.
It is more fluid and more immediate in response, so you don’t have to wait and wonder while waiting for an email or text message.
It is a better way of communicating meaning and subtle comments.
It is much more personal and more “human” than email.
It is much more FUN for both you and me!
It is the BEST way to communicate (aside from a real face to face meeting).
_______
What if this call is international?
I provide a truly global service via this site.
I have clients or mentees and photographers I am helping who are truly located around the world.
I communicate with them all via my special method of Live Voice+Visual Dialog.™
My method helps them all accelerate their learning and quickly improve their photography!
Please read below in this post.
You will find much more information about how I communicate with other photographers around the world in many languages!
If you speak English fluently, I can tell you more information and more clearly and more quickly than I can type. I can tell you more because I will have a “Live and Real Time” dialog or conversation with you. The difference between writing and speaking is considerable. You will see and understand on your first call why this is much better than a written comment or critique on a forum.
If English is NOT your first language or if you are concerned about using English because your use of English is NOT fluent or you may feel inhibited in any way from using English, please read down below in this post. I provide help in 18+ languages in addition to English, so I may be able to help you.
_____________
_____________
2. You will not be called by me!
I do NOT call outbound. You will call me when YOU are ready to speak about your photography.
This is so you can be assured that you will NOT be disturbed at a time that is inconvenient for YOU or your family or your work.
You call me by using your phone or Skype.
You may even make a long-distance or international call for FREE if you use a Skype to Skype (VOIP) call so there would be NO long distance phone charge to you.
_______________
________________
Is English a foreign language for you?
If English is not your native language, but is your second language, then you will find it much easier to communicate using my Live Voice+Visual Dialog™ communication method.
There is no need for you to worry about misspelled words or poor grammar or accent.
I will help you and you will find it easier to express yourself clearly.
If there are any questions, it is easier to get clarity because we will be talking in a dialog. If you ever need to ask me a question to clarify something you may not understand, it is very easy because we are in a dialog, with real-time live communication connecting us.
I have Global Operating Hours (Hours of Availability) that fit YOUR schedule around the globe!
You may also call within a wide window of hours. My Global Operating Hours are 9:00AM (0900 hours) to 9:00PM (2100 hours) SEVEN Days a week. Those hours are based on Eastern Standard Time (New York City’s time zone).
I frequently speak with photographers living on the opposite side of the earth from me. It is not unusual nor is it inconvenient for me to speak with photographers in Japan, Australia, Pacific Islands, China, India, Europe, etc. I do this every week and even on weekends!
Don’t let long distances inhibit you from accessing the expertise that can help you improve your photography!
__________
__________
Global Communications in English or Your Language (when possible)
What if English is not your first language?
What if your use of English is infrequent or limited?
What if you are not fluent in English?
What if your accent is strong?
You must speak some English to communicate with me, but you do NOT have to be fluent or your English could be “limited.”
English does not have to be your first language and you do not need a perfect accent. You do NOT have to be fluent in English. (see the testimonial letter down below).
I have seriously studied 12+ languages other than English (my native language). I truly enjoy speaking with people from other countries, other cultures, and those who speak other languages.
I am accustomed to communicating with people who are using English as a second language. I regularly communicate with people who are from: Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
I may be able to help you even IF your use of English is limited or IF you do not consider yourself fluent in speaking English.
Many people understand more English than they feel comfortable speaking. I understand that and why.
Many people who do NOT speak English frequently or fluently may feel inhibited about calling to speak using English.
Do not feel that way.
I am an expert in cross-cultural communication.
______________
I can help you and will do my best to communicate effectively with you in your language!
I may be able to help you by speaking to you in:
French
Spanish
Portuguese (Brazilian)
German
Dutch
Italian
Japanese
Russian
Swahili
Mandarin Chinese
Catalan
Norwegian
Swedish
Danish
Polish
Romanian
Finnish (coming soon)
Bahasa Malaysia (coming soon)
Bahasa Indonesia (coming soon)
Croatian (coming soon)
Serbian (coming soon)
Slovenian (coming soon)
Filipino (Tagalog) (coming soon)
So if you speak or understand one of those languages and some English or if you speak English fluently, we should talk!
I do not claim to be fluent in those languages (except English) and my accent in those languages may make you wince or laugh at times too. But I will try to help you in YOUR language as much as possible. I may be able to tell you (while speaking in one of those languages above) what I see that could be improved in your images/photos and how you could do it.
If you understand one of those languages and speak some English (even if not fluently), OR if you do speak English, you should be able to understand me and what I will be able to tell you about your photos that may help you improve your photography.
I will keep my comments simple, my speaking pace in English at a pace comfortable for you, and I will make Simple Suggestions™ you should be able to understand and apply even IF your use of English is limited. Read more about how this works on the Six Minute Solution page .

Seven ways you can help other photographers and yourself too!
Have you heard of Karma? Do you believe in the Golden Rule?
Karma is the belief that all deeds can shape the past, present, and future experiences. In the West, this is sometimes expressed by the Christian concept of “you reap what you sow.” In short, do good to others and good may come to you. I truly believe that helping others helps not only them, but also ourselves in ways we often cannot anticipate. Each action of good you do, can make the world a nicer place. Do you believe in the Golden Rule?

This site is written to inspire photographers of all levels and help them have a better experience in photography.
We even have ten pages devoted to tips on how to have a better experience on a photography forum and those tips may help your favorite forum have better posts and more participation.

Other opportunities are related to activities that may be for publishing images and other opportunities to learn or participate. The more subscribers the newsletter has will help us negotiate special offers and discounts from vendors that can then be passed on to you our readers.
It will only take a moment to add your email to the list. Simply fill in the simple Subscribe Form found on the right column of all pages here on the site. Look in the lower right column. The newsletter will keep you informed when we have special offers and opportunities for our friends around the world. You will also learn about exclusive discounts and other nice things.
Don’t worry about receiving too many newsletters or emails from us. We only send out the newsletter infrequently, but when we do, there will be something of value in it for you. There will be many valuable and exclusive things coming in the future, including great opportunities for photographers, so don’t miss this easy way to hear about it first.
7. Look around this site. Soak it in. Imagine. Be inspired!
You might find something else that interests you or helps you. In 2011 I plan to have hundreds of pages of freely accessible educational content, and 5,000+ inspiring photos by Masters of Photography, and dozens of free educational videos.
I recommend seeing the Site Map (Table of Contents) so you can easily see the long list of articles, posts, and pages listed by topics.
If you would like to see if I can help you as a mentor, then just give me a call using the Skype button or the phone number at the bottom of each Page.
Finally, do what you can to help others post their photos and also get comments and have a good time doing so. That makes the world a nicer place and gives us all more nice photography to see on the net.
Thank you for your help.
